Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of fear or apprehension that’s considered a healthy response to stress. However, if these feelings become extreme, interfere with your life, or last longer than six months, they might indicate an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorders are the most common type of emotional disorder. There are several types of disorders that fall under this category, including:

  • Phobias
  • Panic disorders
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Separation anxiety disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Approximately 18% of adults in the United States have an anxiety disorder, as do 8% of teenagers and children. While these disorders can occur in any person at any age, women are affected in higher numbers than men.

What are the symptoms of anxiety disorders?

While anxiety symptoms vary from person to person and also depending on the specific disorder you have, common physical and emotional symptoms include:

  • Twitches or tremors
  • Extreme fear or terror
  • Fatigue or headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Challenges falling asleep
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Irrational thoughts or worry
  • Rapid heart rate or breathing
  • Frequent diarrhea or urination
  • Sweating, nausea, or upset stomach

For some people with anxiety disorders, their symptoms become so severe they’re debilitating.

What causes anxiety disorders?

Genetic and environmental factors come together to create anxiety disorders. These disorders often run in families and are typically linked to traumatic events like death, chronic illness, violence, or abuse.

In some cases, underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, or chronic pain can trigger anxiety symptoms.
